Master Bath Remodel

We've lived in this house nearly 20 years and remodeled every single room — except for the master bathroom. Although we upgraded the toilet and vanity, we were staring at the same tan builder's grade tile in the shower and on the floor.

We fantasized about remodeling this bathroom for years. It was too small for my wife and I to use at the same time, and we were growing impatient. But we kept putting it off during the college years.

After making the last tuition payment for my second child, besides doing a happy dance, we started the serious planning. Time was running out. The fiberglass shower pan was pitted, hard to clean, and slowly disintegrating. So we knew it was only a matter of time before it started leaking.

To replace the shower and upgrade the bathroom in the same space would be a renovation. When you change the space (i.e. moving or removing walls), that's a remodel. That was our plan.

We knew the shower could be enlarged even without moving walls (we knew there was 12 inches of dead space behind the valve), but we decided to make the whole bathroom larger by moving the wall 18 inches into the bedroom.

This project was a very large undertaking, but the tiling was the most time-consuming and tedious part. Next time, I'll be sure to hire a subcontractor to do the tiling!

Starr Tile Videos

I need to give a shout-out to my mentor on this project, Bob Doyle of Starr Tile in Atlanta, Georgia. He taught me everything I needed to know about building and tiling a custom shower. Below are some of his videos that describe the methods I used:
