Top 3 reasons to have a NAS in your home

In this video, I give the top three reasons why your home needs a Network Attached Storage device, or NAS. Synology sent me a DS918+ to evaluate and I found it to be the most versatile electronic appliance in my house.

Thank you for responding. We were planning on going with a hard wired system. The auto tracking feature make a PTZ mount an especially good idea for a corner. We will take a look at the Lorex systems and see what they have.

Hello Mr. Heider. I just finished watching the Living Flip series and was very impressed by this project and the shed build. You, your daughter and her husband did a wonderful job on renovating their property and hopefully you will soon have some grand babies on the way to help you enjoy all the hard work invested in the project by all of you.

We have lived in Tennessee since 2005 and our home is out in the country next to a lake. We do not have much crime here however due to having to evict some people that stayed in our guesthouse last year we are thinking about installing a CCTV system. We thought about using a NAS for the system, but we have 2.3 acres to cover, but it would not be cost effective because you can only connect 2 cameras for free, any additional cameras would require a purchased license.

The last video I saw from you on CCTV systems was from 2016 and there have been a lot of technological changes since that time, including auto tracking PTZ. Have you considered doing a new video on some of these systems for long range applications and then have the surveillance footage downloaded and backed up to a NAS? Like you, we are concerned about our privacy and do not want our footage uploaded to the cloud. Since we are out in the country, our mailbox is roughly 1/10 of a mile from the house up a county road and we are looking for something that would enable us to get notifications on mail delivery since some members of our family get our prescriptions via mail and have limited mobility due to health issues.

If I were to install a surveillance system with no cloud service in 2022, I probably wouldn’t use my NAS. Not that it can’t do the job, but that redundant storage is too valuable to me for my business of making videos. You don’t need RAID for a surveillance system unless you’re guarding Fort Knox. I would also avoid wireless cameras because they push a lot of data over wifi and can have connectivity issues.

Instead, I would opt for a hard-wired system with a dedicated NVR (network video recorder). Believe it or not, my first YouTube video, made in 2012, showed how to install a hard-wired surveillance system. Although the video cables have changed since then, the process of installing cameras and hiding wires is still the same. If you can stand the video from a shaky iPhone 4, it’s worth watching.

As for brand, I found the Lorex system in my 2016 video to be really easy to use. That one used the older style BNC video cables because IP cameras with PoE were still new and expensive. I’d go with an updated version of that system. It worked great.
