Insteon Dimmer Outlet Installation

In this video, I show you how to install and set up an Insteon Dimmer Outlet. I also show you how to connect the device to your Insteon Hub and create a scene that allows you to control the outlet from an Insteon Keypad.

This device works just like a plug-in dimmer module but it's permanently wired-in. It's great for hard-to-reach places like this shelf in my family room.

Hello, I love your videos they are excellent and very easy for a non “techs” person like me to follow. I have a question about the hubs range. I am getting ready to build a house I would like for my electrician to wire in Insta Jan switches and capable outlets throughout the house. I am capable of setting up the hub and scenes by following your video. My house is large (6,000sqft) and very wide (140′). WI ll the hub still be able to reach switches and plugs if the hub is set up on the far end of the house and has to penetrate multiple walls?

Hi Lance. I forwarded your question directly to my contact at Insteon and here was his reply:

Great question. Because Insteon uses both powerline and RF (radio frequency) to transmit, the signals are capable of travelling “through” walls much better than other traditional RF-only solutions (Wi-Fi, Z-wave, Zigbee, etc.). What makes it even more powerful is that each Insteon plug or wire-in device also acts as a repeater, extending the signal hundreds of feet from the original source (i.e., Insteon Hub). As a tip for anyone getting started with Insteon: have all the devices installed before you start linking to the hub. We have customers that are anxious to get going when they receive a box of Insteon that they’ll install the hub and one switch somewhere far from the hub. While there is a good chance it will work, the best experience would be to have all gear installed first so that they can help extend the signal throughout the home. This makes for a super simple and reliable first experience.

      Thanks,
      Chris
